Foreigners can hold freehold title in their own name, with the same ownership rights as Dominican nationals. There is no local partner requirement and no local company requirement. The risk is not nationality: it is title, contract quality and project claims. An independent lawyer you pay for — not the developer's lawyer — verifies the registry position before money moves.

## The path
1. Decide the goal: Rent, live or build, and only then the zone.
2. Make a written offer: Including the due-diligence conditions you need.
3. Sign a promise of sale: And pay the deposit into a properly identified account named in the contract.
4. Verify: Your independent lawyer checks title, encumbrances, permits and taxes at the registry.
5. Close and register: Pay transfer tax where applicable and register title in your name.

## Money and residency
Prices in the corridor are commonly quoted in US dollars, while some costs settle in Dominican pesos. Plan the transfer route and the exchange spread before closing, not on the day.
Property ownership by itself is not residency. The Dominican Republic has investor and ordinary residency categories with their own requirements, handled by an immigration specialist.

## FAQ

### Can foreigners own property in the Dominican Republic?
Answer: Yes. Foreigners can hold freehold title in their own name, with the same ownership rights as Dominican nationals. There is no requirement to use a local partner or a local company.

### Do I need to be in the country to buy?
Answer: Not necessarily. Much of the process can be handled through a power of attorney granted to your independent lawyer, properly legalised. Visiting is still the best way to judge a building, a street and a manager.

### Does buying property give me residency?
Answer: Property ownership by itself is not residency. The Dominican Republic has investor and other residency categories with their own requirements and processes. Treat residency as a separate legal question, handled by an immigration specialist.

### Who should pay for my lawyer?
Answer: You should. A lawyer introduced and paid by the developer or seller is not independent. Your lawyer's job is title verification, contract review, tax and closing structure, and protecting your deposit.
